2020 Spring: 4, 5 and 6 year olds

Division Description

  • 4, 5 and 6 year olds will be assigned to the Training League.
  • Focus in this division will be on introducing baseball as a sport and developing basic baseball skills through fun drills and games.
  • At this age, softer/safer baseballs are used with a mix of batting tees and coach pitch.
  • All coaches are Ripken Certified and trained on player safety.

Team Selection

  • Teams are created primarily based on the school the player attends with the goal of balancing the skill level of the teams.
  • We do our best to accommodate buddy requests during the team selection process - please note these in the registration system.
  • Players will be called with team assignment mid-April.

The Season

  • Players will have access to 1-hour optional pre-season "pop-up" clinics...FREE for our registered players!
  • Teams practice once a week and play one game on Saturday (occasionally on Sunday).
  • The season will begin late April and will end by early June.

All players will receive a uniform jersey and hat they can keep.

2020 Spring: 7 and 8 year olds

VP, Instructional Division - Patrick Sharkey (bluessharkey@gmail.com)
Division Description

  • Eligible: Boys and girls with birthdates between May 1, 2011 and April 30, 2013
  • 7 and 8 year olds will be assigned to the Instructional League, a machine pitch league using regular baseballs.
  • Machines at this age are used to build batter confidence (no walks, safer and more strikes), minimize wear on young throwing arms, and keep games going at a good pace.
  • Focus in the Instructional League is teaching basic baseball fundamentals, rules of play and teamwork concepts.
  • All coaches are Ripken Certified and trained on player safety.

Team Selection

The Season

  • Players will have access to weekly pre-season indoor clinics...FREE to our registered players!

  • Regular Season, May/June: 1 practice on weekdays and typically 2 games on weekends.
  • Playoffs: All teams make the playoffs at the end of the season.
  • Season will end by early June.
  • All players will receive a jersey and hat they can keep.

Playing Up

  • Eight year old players who wish to play up to the Minors Division (player pitch) should register for the Instructional League and inform the VP, Instructional Division Patrick Sharkey (bluessharkey@gmail.com) and Minors Divisions (Mike Davidson, (uconn3xwin@gmail.com) of the player's interest.
  • Each Minor League team will have no more than one 8 year old assigned to it.
  • Interested players will be required to attend a skills assessment on Saturday, March 14th at Kingwood Oxford.

Selection & Assessment

  • Players in the Minors will be assigned to teams by the Minor League Vice President based on a combination of the skills assessment, school, and 2019 team (if applicable) in an effort to balance the skill level of all teams.
  • All 9 and 10 year olds will be required to attend a skills assessment on Saturday, March 14th at Kingswood Oxford School.
  • For 9 year olds, the skills assessment will be used to help us balance the Minor League teams by skill level and to determine team assignments.
  • For 10 year olds, they will be used to determine whether their skills are better suited for the Majors or Minors. In a typical year, each team in the Majors has two 10-year olds.

Division Description

  • Minor League games are played on the 46/60 diamond, feature player pitching, and are umpired. Focus in the Minors is more in-depth instruction on fundamentals and team play, while allowing for a little more competition.
  • Coaches are experienced, Ripken-certified and trained on Player safety
  • Team assignments are made by March 22nd
  • Season will end by mid-June unless inclement weather dictates otherwise.
  • All teams make the playoffs following the regular season

Time Commitment

  • 2 practices per week until May after which just once per week.
  • Games are scheduled twice a week; subject to change as dictated by weather

Playing in Instructional, Minors or Majors

  • 8 year olds interested in the Minor League should register in 7/8 Year Old Instructional Division.
  • Then, notify Minor League VP Mike Davidson (uconn3xwin@gmail.com) and Instructional League VP Patrick Sharkey (bluessharkey@gmail.com) that they would like to apply to play up.

2020 Spring: 11 and 12 year olds (Not on 2019 Major League Roster)



All 11 and 12 year olds who were not on a Spring 2019 WHYBL Majors roster will be required to attend a skills assessment on (tentatively scheduled for Saturday, 3/14/20) at Kingswood Oxford's Hoffman FieldhouseFollowing the skills assessment, all 11 and 12 year olds may be assigned to either the Major League or Minor League, based on the results of the assessment.

Players will be called with Team assignment by 3/16 for Majors and 3/22 for Minors.

Playing in the Majors:

  • The Major League is WHYBL's most competitive division and games are played on the 50/70 diamond (larger/safer/transitional to the "big diamond").
  • Focus is teaching and experiencing "real" MLB rules and concepts (leading, pick offs, balks, etc).

The Majors Season

  • Teams will practice twice a week in April and then just once a week when the regular season starts in May.
  • Games are scheduled 2 to 3 times a week.
  • All teams make the playoffs following the regular season.
  • Season will end by June 16th unless inclement weather dictates otherwise.
