Why West Hartford Youth Baseball League?

West Hartford Youth Baseball League (WHYBL), is proud to be the longest running and most experienced youth baseball league in West Hartford...providing memorable experiences for young baseball players and families for over 70 years.

WHYBL prioritizes increasing and sustaining love for the game of baseball by emphasizing baseball and athletic skill development in an environment that embodies and celebrates sportsmanship, teamwork and fun

The information below is intended to provide a general overview of our league, further describe our unique youth baseball offering and help you understand how WHYBL has made a postive impact on thousands of young baseball players over the last several decades.

  • WHYBL is honored to be affiliated with Cal Ripken Baseball, the youth division of Babe Ruth League  https://www.baberuthleague.org/

  • WHYBL offers something for all boys and girls (ages 4 to 12), at all levels of ability and experience, and at all times throughout the year.  Our offerings include:

    • Very popular Spring, Summer and Fall recreational leagues.

      • All leagues and divisions have fair/balanced playing time rules and require that all players bat the entire game. Click below to learn more details and about the unique offering within our age divisions.

      • While no process is perfect, in all recreational divisions WHYBL uses methods to ensure talent is distributed evenly and that teams are as balanced as possible.

      • Consistent with other youth sports leagues in town, players remain on the same team until they graduate from the division (typically two years), helping promote relationship building and teamwork concepts as players, coaches and families move through different experiences together.

    • A competitive Summer Travel/District program...known as one of the best in CT.

    • Offseason options that include winter workouts, camps and events held in our own indoor baseball facility - - most available at no cost to our players.  Check out the WHYBL Indoor Baseball Center here: Indoor Baseball Center

  • Our league's format and coaching experience helps provide top-notch instruction and baseball development for our players.  WHYBL is the only league in town that offers full local divisions/leagues for both 46/60 and 50/70 formats - - providing our players opportunities to progress, grow and learn all throughout their playing years.

  • Coaches are Cal Ripken Baseball Certified.  As part of the Babe Ruth Coaching Education Program, this extensive certification course helps coaches provide the best possible experience for players, prepare for the season and coach baseball the Ripken Way. This course was developed solely for coaches affiliated with Babe Ruth League and Cal Ripken Baseball and contains content provided by coaching experts at Cal Ripken Baseball not found anywhere else.

  • WHYBL's age cutoff is April 30th, allowing kids to play the Spring season at their current age.

    • Example: Your player doesn't turn 13 until the Summer?  If your child turns 13 any time after 4/30, they would still be considered a 12 year old in WHYBL for the Spring season.

  • WHYBL distributes quality uniform jerseys and hats to our players they can keep.  Many wear these jerseys and hats proudly throughout the year to have fun with their friends and players from other teams!  Kids also really enjoy that our Minor League team names and hats are replicas of real professional Minor League teams.

  • Games are held at popular West Hartford local parks (Eisenhower, Fern, Beachland and Wolcott Parks).  Kids love playing night games under the lights at Wolcott Park! Beginning with the 2023 season, Wolcott Park will be completely renovated with new playing surfaces, lights, dugouts, fences, etc., making it one of the premier youth baseball fields in central CT.

WHYBL knows that the key to delivering positive and memorable experiences is staying connected with our players and families.   We have evolved and improved as an organization over the years through surveys and direct feedback, as we continue to focus on what’s best for the kids, families and the great sport of baseball in West Harford today.  Please feel free to reach out to any of our Board members at any time with questions, ideas or feedback.
