**The followng safety guidleines and protocols were in place for the 2020 summer and fall seasons. WHYBL will continue to work with local health officials to update as needed for 2021.**


WHYBL is excited to bring baseball back to the West Hartford community, with some changes required by the Governor’s Reopen Sector Rules to help us keep our players, coaches, umpires and spectators safe throughout the season. Please read the following Rules for Participation that will apply for the 2020 season. We appreciate your help and partnership in adhering to these rules and protocols.

Screening at home prior to ALL games and practices:

  1. Parents/guardians are required to monitor their player for the symptoms below prior to each practice, game, or other team event. Coaches, staff, umpires and volunteers must self-monitor. Anyone who is sick, or exhibiting any of the following symptoms, is required to stay home:
    • Chills
    • Repeated shaking with chills
    • Muscle aches
    • Headache
    • Sore throat
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Fever (temperature of 100°F or higher)
    • Shortness of breath
    • Diarrhea
    • Nausea or vomiting

  2.Anyone missing practice or a game due to COVID-19-related illness or symptoms please email with symptoms and onset date.

  1. Any player, family member, umpire, coach or league official who tests positive for COVID- 19 is required to immediately notify WHYBL Safety Officer Liz Davidson (860.982.8647) and follow state testing and tracing protocols.

Player information

  1. Face Masks
    • Face masks should be worn when walking to and from the parking area.
    • Face masks do not have to be worn by players while actively participating in the game.
    • Players are strongly encouraged to wear a mask when not on the field.
    • Players may wear masks at all times, if desired.
  2. There will be no sharing of equipment by players. The following is a list of equipment and supplies required for each practice and game:
    • Face mask to cover mouth and nose (surgical or cloth)
    • Batting helmet
    • Baseball bat
    • Baseball glove
    • Baseball cap labeled with name of player
    • Water bottle labeled with name of player
    • Chair (recommended as benches will be closed)
  1. Arrival
    • Please arrive at the time given to you by the team’s Manager for all scheduled games and practices. Do not arrive early. Games are staggered to minimize large groups and crowds. Arriving at the scheduled time will ensure less crowding and easier parking.
    • Players are to stay in the PLAYER area and not mingle or visit with the spectators.

On the field and during play

  1. Frequently touched surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected after each game, including, but not necessarily limited to, the rakes and other equipment stored in the Field Jobox. This maintenance, as well as post-game field maintenance, will be done by the manager, coach or safety coordinator.
  2. On-field pre-game warm-ups are limited to no more than 30 minutes.
  3. Pregame plate meetings, if necessary, will be limited to one manager or coach from each team and the umpire. All participants will maintain social distancing.
  4. There will only be one umpire per game. The umpire will call the game from behind the mound and wear a face mask.
  5. Dugouts and benches will be closed to players. When not on the field, players will be required to spread out down the respective foul lines (out of play) to maintain appropriate social distancing. Areas will be marked and socially distant from each other. ONLY Coaches are permitted to use the dugouts.
  6. Each team will supply baseballs for use during their defensive innings. A designated coach on each team will control the baseballs to minimize umpire and spectator contact. Coaches will retrieve balls that go out of play.
  7. Players shall handle their equipment only and keep it stored on the sidelines near their chair/bag.
  8. Spitting is not allowed. Gum, sunflower seeds and similar/snack items are not allowed.
  9. Coach or bat owner will retrieve bats after each player’s turn.
  10. Balls will be changed and/or disinfected at least once every two innings.
  11. Handshakes, huddles, and unnecessary contact are prohibited during the game. There will be no post-game handshakes, first bumps, or slaps. A cap tip or other fun, non-contact acknowledgment will be used to display good sportsmanship.


  1. All coaches and volunteers must self-monitor for symptoms as described above.
  2. Managers, Coaches, Staff and Umpires will follow the CT state guideline around wearing masks: Coaches, staff and umpires are required to wear a face mask or cloth face covering when unable to easily, continuously, and measurably keep 6 ft of physical distance from others, unless doing so would be contrary to his or her health or safety due to medical conditions.
  3. Player and coach attendance will be taken (and maintained) by managers at all games and practices.


  1. Bleacher seating will be closed.
  2. Per the Reopen Connecticut Rules, there should be limited family members present as spectators. Families should also sit 6 feet apart from other families, and wear a face mask (surgical or cloth) when 6-foot social distancing cannot be maintained. Please ensure all persons attending the game bring a face mask.
  3. After the games and practices please do not congregate at the fields, parking lot, or player area.

Prior to engaging in any baseball activities, parents of each player will be required to sign a waiver substantially similar to the AMATEUR ATHLETIC WAIVER AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY..
